World Heritage Fossil Sites: Tracing the History of Life on Earth


Fossils preserve an extraordinary record of life on Earth. Embedded within ancient seabeds, sedimentary rocks, cave deposits, and former landscapes, they reveal how organisms evolved, adapted, and disappeared over billions of years. They provide the evidence that allows scientists to reconstruct ancient ecosystems, trace evolutionary change, and understand the major events that have shaped the living world.

World Heritage Explorer highlights World Heritage properties that preserve some of the planet’s most important fossil discoveries, from the earliest traces of life and the first complex organisms to dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals, and the evolution of humankind. Together, these remarkable sites form a journey through deep time, revealing the geological and biological processes that have shaped life on Earth.

The Earliest Chapters of Life

The oldest fossil-bearing World Heritage Sites preserve evidence from the earliest chapters of life, when Earth's ecosystems were dominated by microbial and marine environments. Their rocks record the emergence of simple organisms, the appearance of increasingly complex life, and the biological innovations that laid the foundations for all later evolution.

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains preserve some of the oldest sedimentary rocks on Earth, containing evidence of microbial life dating back more than 3.4 billion years. These remarkably well-preserved formations provide a rare glimpse into the conditions that prevailed on the young planet.

In Shark Bay, Western Australia, living stromatolites resemble structures produced by microbial communities that were widespread in Earth's shallow seas for much of its early history. Although still growing today, they provide an important analogue for understanding some of the planet's earliest fossil ecosystems.

The Mistaken Point World Heritage Site preserves one of the world's finest collections of Ediacaran fossils. Dating from around 565 million years ago, these remarkable impressions record some of the earliest large multicellular organisms known before the rapid diversification of animal life.

The Explosion of Animal Life

Around 540 million years ago, the Cambrian Explosion transformed Earth's oceans as most major animal groups appeared over a relatively short geological interval. UNESCO World Heritage Sites preserve some of the world's most important fossil assemblages from this pivotal chapter in evolutionary history.

The Chengjiang Fossil Site contains exceptionally preserved soft-bodied fossils documenting the rapid diversification of animal life during the early Cambrian.

The Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks include the famous Burgess Shale, one of the world's most celebrated fossil localities. Its remarkable preservation of soft-bodied organisms has transformed scientific understanding of early animal evolution and the complexity of Cambrian ecosystems.

Ancient Seas and Changing Oceans

For hundreds of millions of years, the oceans remained the principal stage for the evolution of life. Marine sediments preserve an exceptional record of changing environments, documenting the rise of fishes, marine reptiles, whales, and some of the greatest extinction events in Earth's history.

Miguasha National Park contains one of the world's richest Devonian fish fossil assemblages, illustrating a critical stage in vertebrate evolution, when lobe-finned fishes related to the ancestors of four-legged terrestrial vertebrates were diversifying.

The fossil-rich deposits of Monte San Giorgio preserve an extraordinary Middle Triassic marine ecosystem, including fishes, marine reptiles, and invertebrates that flourished after the greatest mass extinction in Earth's history.

Anticosti records one of the best-preserved sequences across the Ordovician–Silurian mass extinction, while Stevns Klint preserves exceptional evidence of the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary and the environmental consequences of the asteroid impact associated with the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. Nearby, Møns Klint and The Bony Fish Fossils of the Western Limfjord, inscribed in 2026, document marine life during the early Cenozoic.

The spectacular fossils of Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) illustrate one of evolution's most remarkable transitions, preserving ancient whales that document the gradual adaptation of land mammals to life in the sea.

Life Conquers the Land

As plants and animals expanded onto the continents, forests, rivers, floodplains, and deserts gave rise to increasingly complex terrestrial ecosystems. Several World Heritage Sites preserve these important stages in the colonization of the land.

Joggins Fossil Cliffs contain an exceptional Carboniferous fossil record of early forests, amphibians, reptiles, and insects, documenting some of the earliest terrestrial ecosystems.

The Dorset and East Devon Coast, known as England's Jurassic Coast, exposes almost 185 million years of geological history and preserves abundant fossils recording changing environments and evolving marine and terrestrial life.

Although celebrated primarily for its geology, Grand Canyon National Park also preserves an extensive fossil record spanning hundreds of millions of years, while Lena Pillars Nature Park contains important Cambrian fossil deposits that illuminate the development of early ecosystems.

The Age of Dinosaurs

The Mesozoic Era witnessed the rise and diversification of dinosaurs, together with many other reptiles that dominated terrestrial ecosystems for more than 160 million years. World Heritage Sites preserve fossils from both the dawn of the dinosaurs and their later evolutionary success.

The Ischigualasto / Talampaya Natural Parks contain the world's most complete continental fossil record known from the Triassic Period, documenting the evolution of vertebrates and the emergence of the dinosaurs and early mammals.

Dinosaur Provincial Park preserves one of the richest Late Cretaceous dinosaur fossil assemblages ever discovered, with hundreds of specimens representing an extraordinary diversity of species.

The Dolomites preserve important fossil evidence from the Triassic Period, recording ancient tropical seas and the ecosystems that flourished long before the formation of today's dramatic mountain landscape.

The Rise of Mammals

The extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs around 66 million years ago marked one of the greatest turning points in the history of life. As ecological niches became vacant, mammals diversified rapidly, eventually becoming the dominant terrestrial vertebrates.

The Messel Pit Fossil Site is renowned for its extraordinary preservation of Eocene mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and plants, offering one of the most complete snapshots of an ancient ecosystem anywhere in the world.

The Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh / Naracoorte) document more than 30 million years of marsupial evolution and provide an unparalleled record of Australia's unique mammalian fauna.

The Fossil Record of Human Evolution

Among the more recent chapters in Earth's history represented by World Heritage properties are sites documenting the evolution of humankind. Together, they illuminate the emergence of early hominins, their dispersal across Africa and Eurasia, and the development of increasingly sophisticated technologies and behaviours.

East Africa preserves some of the earliest evidence of human evolution. The Lower Valley of the Awash, Lower Valley of the Omo, Lake Turkana National Parks, and Melka Kunture and Balchit have yielded fossils and archaeological evidence spanning several million years, documenting the emergence of early hominins, the evolution of the genus Homo, and the development of increasingly sophisticated stone-tool technologies.

Southern Africa contributes another vital chapter through the Fossil Hominid Sites of South Africa, one of the world's richest sources of australopithecine and early human fossils. Complementing these discoveries, The Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour: The Pleistocene Occupation Sites of South Africa preserves evidence for the cognitive and cultural innovations associated with early Homo sapiens, including symbolic behaviour, advanced tools, and the use of marine resources.

As human populations expanded beyond Africa, the Peking Man Site at Zhoukoudian and the Sangiran Early Man Site became key witnesses to the spread of Homo erectus across Asia, while the Archaeological Site of Atapuerca, the Sites of Human Evolution at Mount Carmel, Gorham's Cave Complex, and the Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley illuminate different stages of human evolution and prehistoric occupation in Europe and the Near East, including important evidence for Neanderthals and early modern humans.

Recently inscribed properties continue to refine this story. The Prehistoric Sites of the Khorramabad Valley preserve an exceptional sequence of human occupation spanning the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, while Faya Paleolandscape provides important evidence for the migration and adaptation of early modern humans in the Arabian Peninsula, contributing to our understanding of human dispersal from Africa.

A Global Archive of Evolution

Viewed together, World Heritage fossil sites tell one of the greatest stories on Earth—the history of life itself. They preserve the emergence of the first organisms, the evolution of increasingly complex animals, the rise and extinction of dinosaurs, the diversification of mammals, and the origins of our own species. Each site represents a unique chapter in this immense narrative, while collectively they form an unparalleled archive of Earth's biological heritage.

By protecting these exceptional places, the World Heritage Convention safeguards not only remarkable fossils, but also the scientific record that continues to deepen our understanding of evolution, environmental change, and the history of life across more than three billion years.
