Summary
A significant impact of the Dakar-Bamako highway corridor on wildlife populations in Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal, has been documented. The study reveals that diurnal animals (74.34%) are disproportionately affected by vehicle collisions compared to nocturnal species (25.66%). Key consequences include hydrocarbon pollution of water bodies, uncontrollable bushfires, and noise pollution, alongside 45 recorded traffic accidents causing human casualties, injuries, fuel spills, and spilled goods. The research utilized a database of reported incidents and photo-trap cameras installed within a five-kilometer radius of the road, analyzed using specialized software. Findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions and inform protected area management plans.
