Summary
A groundbreaking analysis of the 17th–18th century wall paintings in St. Michael's Church, Krajnikovo, reveals a unique synthesis of post-Byzantine traditions with local Ukrainian folk iconographic programs. The study, the first of its kind in Ukrainian art history, identifies distinctive regional traits in church painting on Zakarpattia during this period by comparing preserved murals with those in neighboring Romanian and Galician churches. Employing stylistic, historical-cultural, and comparative methods, researchers uncovered reciprocal influences across Maramureș (Maramoroș), Galicia, and Kiev, shedding light on the cultural exchange that shaped the artistic heritage of the Carpathian wooden churches.
