Ichthyological Biodiversity and the Fish Value Chain in the Fishing Basins of Bamingui, Bangoran, Koukourou and Ndélé, Partly in the Protected Area Zones of the Central African Republic (CAR)
Research on the ichthyological biodiversity and fish value chain in the Bamingui, Bangoran, Koukourou, and Ndélé fishing basins of the Central African Republic (CAR) reveals a significant but understudied freshwater fish fauna. The study identified 18 families and 43 species of fish, highlighting their importance as a source of animal protein and economic livelihood for local populations. Artisanal fishing, conducted in two seasonal periods with catch rates ranging from 4 to 17 kg/day, generates substantial income across the value chain, with retailers earning up to $1,334/month. However, the current practices are not sustainable, underscoring the need for further examination and potential interventions to ensure long-term viability.
