Summary

A shift from traditional vertically planted vineyards to modern terraced ones in Germany's Upper Middle Rhine Valley can help sustain economically viable viticulture while supporting diverse spider communities. Research found that terraced vineyards, alongside vineyard fallows and forests, create a landscape mosaic that enhances species diversity. While managed terraced vineyards favor xerophilic species adapted to open habitats, vineyard fallows support distinct late-successional spider communities. The study highlights the importance of maintaining open habitat structures through viticulture management and preserving landscape heterogeneity to conserve biodiversity.
