Ancient Traditional Settlements in Algeria: Pentapolis of M'Zab Valley

The Pentapolis of M'Zab Valley in Algeria represents a unique example of long-standing urban tradition and architectural adaptation, offering insights into the harmonization of ancient practices with modern living. This study highlights the exceptional preservation of five historic ksour settlements within the valley, showcasing their traditional planning structures and climate-adaptive building techniques tailored to the harsh Sahara desert environment. The research emphasizes the resilience of these communities, which have maintained their urban infrastructure and architectural styles for over a millennium, demonstrating sustainable coexistence with their surroundings. By analyzing macro-level urban design and climate adaptation strategies, this work provides a compelling case study for understanding how ancient traditions can endure in the face of modernity.
