Manifestation and Management of Cultural Heritage: An Analysis of the Old Towns of Kenyan Coastal Region

Cultural heritage in Kenya's coastal old towns of Lamu and Mombasa is primarily manifested through symbols, values, artifacts, and architecture, with tangible heritage often restored for tourism while intangible heritage is preserved as part of local life. The study highlights a disparity in management approaches, where architectural restoration prioritizes economic benefits, whereas intangible heritage preservation is driven by cultural values like religion. Recommendations emphasize leveraging tourism to sustain heritage resilience, ensuring its longevity through gainful economic activities.
