Summary

Assam, India, holds significant potential for eco-tourism due to its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Manas Wildlife Sanctuary. However, sustainable development faces challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, ecosystem disruption, and limited community involvement. Recent initiatives, including the Assam Project on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation, aim to address these issues by promoting community-run facilities, hospitality training, and environmentally sensitive tourism. This study highlights that while eco-tourism can contribute to biodiversity conservation and regional development, its success depends on overcoming logistical, ecological, and social barriers.
