Redesigning historic cities facing rapid tourism growth

Rapid tourism growth in Macao's historic centre has exacerbated traffic congestion and pollution, particularly along narrow streets like San Ma Lou Avenue, where tall buildings trap particulate matter. This study identifies the urban design flaws contributing to these issues and proposes green solutions that could mitigate environmental impacts while preserving the area's historic integrity. Drawing on experiences from other global tourist cities, the research advocates for interventions that enhance liveability for residents and visitor experience without compromising the built environment.
