Summary
A comprehensive analysis of mangrove species from the Saloum Delta in Senegal reveals significant antioxidant potential, particularly in Laguncularia racemosa and Conocarpus erectus, which exhibit higher phenolic content and stronger free radical scavenging activity compared to Avicennia germinans. Using UHPLC-MS/MS combined with molecular networking, researchers identified 153 metabolites, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, hydrolysable tannins, and terpenoids. On-line DPPH and ABTS assays pinpointed key antioxidants like ellagic acid and quercetin glycosides, underscoring the chemical richness of these mangroves. This study advances the understanding of West African mangrove biodiversity and highlights their potential as sources of bioactive natural products for pharmacological applications.
