Fatehpur Sikri. Un catálogo espacial
Fatehpur Sikri presents a unique urban and architectural configuration that defies conventional geometric alignment with its rocky promontory base. This study reveals how the city's spatial organization, rooted in Islamic and Hindu traditions, creates a dynamic itinerary through its red sandstone palaces and buildings, characterized by twists, turns, and surprises rather than strict axial symmetry. The research demonstrates that individual pavilions within the city serve as key reference points, guiding movement and reinforcing the overall urban design. By redrawing on-site measurements of the city's layout and pavilion plans, the authors illustrate how these spatial ideas are intricately linked to the broader concept of Fatehpur Sikri, highlighting an interdependent relationship between architecture and urban planning.
Ragatime: Glimpses of Akbar’s Court at Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri, once the seat of the Mughal Empire under Emperor Akbar, is celebrated not only for its architectural grandeur but also for its rich musical heritage. The study 'Ragatime: Glimpses of Akbar’s Court at Fatehpur Sikri' presents a unique interpretation of Raga Bilaskhani Todi, encapsulating the principles of dhrupad, a genre of Hindustani classical music developed by Akbar's court musician Mian Tansen. The piece, 'Ragatime,' begins with an alap setting the emotional tone and transitions into an extended improvisation (gat) marked by rhythmic drumming, showcasing subtle musical nuances that distinguish one raga from another. This work underscores the enduring relevance of Tansen’s compositions, which remain influential among contemporary raga performers. By blending traditional musical elements with modern interpretation, 'Ragatime' offers a glimpse into the flourishing music culture at Fatehpur Sikri during Akbar's reign.
SMR Geomechanics and Kinematic Analysis near Rasulpur, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh
A geomechanical and kinematic analysis of sandstone slopes at Rasulpur, Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh, reveals that the slopes fall within good stability classes (2a and 2b) according to the SMR Geomechanics classification. However, the study identifies a potential risk of toppling failures due to structurally controlled joint sets, which could pose hazards during excavation. To mitigate these risks, the researchers recommend implementing safety measures such as rock bolting and the installation of nets during excavation. This analysis combines field investigations with laboratory tests to assess slope stability, providing actionable insights for safer mining practices in the region.
East-West Swerves: Cārvāka Materialism and Akbar's Religious Debates at Fatehpur Sikri
A resurgence of Cārvāka materialist philosophy during the late sixteenth-century Mughal Empire is linked to broader intellectual movements, including the European Renaissance and Enlightenment. This study suggests that Akbar's religious debates at Fatehpur Sikri, which included Cārvāka philosophers, may have facilitated cross-cultural exchanges akin to the influence of Lucretian atomism in Europe. By analyzing Jesuit missionary writings from Akbar's court, the research traces potential 'swerves' or intellectual flows between regions, proposing that early modern debates about materialism were part of a globalized process contributing to the rise of modernity.
Syncretic Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri: A Symbol of Composite Culture
Fatehpur Sikri stands as a testament to the syncretic architectural innovation of the Mughal era, particularly under Emperor Akbar's reign. This study reveals how the fusion of indigenous Indian and Islamic architectural styles created a unique composite culture, blending traditional Indian grandeur with Islamic simplicity. The research highlights Akbar's role in unifying diverse artistic traditions, achieving a synthesis that transcended regional differences and set a new standard for architecture in India. By analyzing the construction techniques and stylistic elements integrated into Fatehpur Sikri, the study demonstrates how this city became a symbol of cultural harmony and architectural evolution during the Mughal period.
Influence of stone quarries on groundwater quality and health in Fatehpur Sikri, India
Stone quarries significantly degrade groundwater quality and pose health risks in Fatehpur Sikri, India. Research reveals elevated fluoride levels (1.7–3.8 mg/l in shallow aquifers) near quarries, linked to dental and skeletal fluorosis. While deep aquifers are more saline overall, shallow ones exhibit higher concentrations of hazardous chemicals like Na+, K+, Cl−, and F−. The study, based on water samples collected in 2012–2013, demonstrates that quarrying activities directly and indirectly contaminate groundwater, exacerbating salinity and fluoride levels—especially near active quarries. This finding underscores the environmental and public health consequences of unregulated quarrying in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
