Summary
Museums rooted in historical excavation sites, such as those in Hebei Province, China, can enhance visitor engagement and information retention by integrating the 'sense of place'—a concept emphasizing authenticity, historicity, and regional identity. Research demonstrates that exhibits designed around these principles, rather than relying solely on advanced multimedia, foster deeper spatial experiences. Two distinct exhibition strategies emerged: one with a fluid, thematic narrative tied to physical spaces (e.g., Yinxu Museum) and another with a linear, chronological structure emphasizing symbolic historical representation (e.g., Writing Museum). These findings suggest that aligning exhibitions with the inherent qualities of a site—its past temporal context and material authenticity—can significantly improve how visitors perceive and absorb cultural information. This insight offers a framework for developing systematic guidelines to design future regional museums effectively.
