Summary

A novel HBIM-based decision-making approach offers a sustainable framework for conserving historical timber structures, ensuring minimal intervention while maximizing quality. The method integrates tradition and innovation, evaluating various intervention alternatives using multi-criteria analysis (AHP) and the MIVES methodology. Applied to the Michelangelo Cloister roof in Rome—a UNESCO-listed site—the study quantifies sustainability through an index that balances environmental, economic, technological, historic, and social factors. This approach provides a data-driven strategy for preserving architectural heritage while adhering to principles of minimum intervention.
