Summary
A ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey at the Basilica of San Paolo fuori le Mura in Rome reveals new insights into the evolution of the basilica's core, particularly around the tomb of St. Paul. Conducted collaboratively by Dartmouth College, Università della Svizzera Italiana, CNR, and the Vatican, the study combines high-resolution GPR imaging with archival analyses to visualize subsurface structures in 2D time-slices and 3D isosurfaces. The findings, interpreted alongside archaeologists and historians, enhance understanding of the basilica's development from the 4th century to modern times, shedding light on its historical and liturgical significance as a pilgrimage destination for popes and potentates.
