Summary
A comprehensive redescription of the amphipod species Melita tristanensis, first documented by K.H. Barnard in 1965, reveals key morphological distinctions that differentiate it from related species. This study provides detailed illustrations and descriptions of both male and female specimens, addressing gaps left by Barnard's original work. Notably, M. tristanensis is distinguished by unique features such as the presence of a small acute spine on epimeron 3, differences in mandibular palp structure, and specific antenna and uropod characteristics. The species is confirmed to inhabit marine environments among kelp holdfasts, with a distribution limited to Tristan Da Cunha, including Gough Island, Inaccessible Island, and Nightingale Island. This redescription enhances taxonomic clarity and contributes to the understanding of biodiversity in this remote UNESCO World Heritage Site.
