Summary

Mexico's shift from preserving historical monuments to prioritizing tourism has led to the decline of heritage conservation efforts. A study analyzing declarations of Historical Monuments Zones and Pueblos Mágicos designations between 1970 and 2018 reveals that post-2001, Mexico increasingly treated cultural heritage as an economic resource, neglecting its protection. The research demonstrates how global patrimonialization processes and tourism policies, such as the Pueblos Mágicos program, have overshadowed traditional conservation strategies, particularly in sites like Zacatecas.
