Summary

A groundbreaking 3D tomography of Stromboli Volcano, Aeolian Islands (Italy), reveals the thermal plumbing system beneath the volcano using electrical conductivity and induced polarization data. The study identifies a highly conductive body (10⁻²–1.0 S/m) linked to CO₂ and temperature anomalies at the surface, corresponding to a hydrothermal system dominated by alteration processes such as cation exchange in clay minerals and zeolites. A 2.5D induced polarization tomography further confirms this interpretation. The derived temperature tomogram aligns with surface heat signatures and Very Long Period (VLP) seismicity, indicating a lateral shift in the hottest fluid source at ~600 m above sea level. Structural boundaries play a critical role in channeling hydrothermal fluids toward the active crater terrace, providing new insights into Stromboli's mild-explosive activity.
