Summary
A comprehensive study of the Perequê-Açu river basin in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, reveals significant insights into its ichthyofaunal diversity. The research identified 23 native fish species across seven orders and ten families, with Cyprinodontiformes and Siluriformes dominating the composition, accounting for 87.2% of the total abundance. Notably, Phalloceros anisophallos and Schizolecis guntheri contributed to 63.2% of the sampled individuals. The study found that fish composition varies significantly across different sub-basins, with the Sertões River sub-basin exhibiting the highest species diversity (18 species). Additionally, approximately 78.3% of the drainage's species are residents, with a notable concentration in the Carrasquinho River sub-basin. The research utilized twelve sampling campaigns and employed statistical analyses such as PERMANOVA, PCoA, and SIMPER to assess distribution patterns and conservation status, providing critical data for understanding and protecting this understudied coastal drainage within the Atlantic Forest.
