Summary

A study conducted at Mbanza-Ngungu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), identified nine earthworm species belonging to two families, with Dichogaster austeni and Hyperiodrilus africanus being notably widespread across different biotopes. Earthworms play a crucial role in soil fertility and nutrient cycling by decomposing litter and maintaining soil structure through gallery formation. The research, spanning from 2017 to 2019, found that species richness and diversity decreased from gallery formations to grasslands, highlighting the ecological significance of these organisms in the region's ecosystems.
