Summary

Researchers report the first documented presence of Panstrongylus geniculatus, a triatomine bug species known to transmit Chagas disease, inside a building on Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This discovery highlights a potential risk for local Chagas disease transmission, as P. geniculatus is frequently found infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible for the disease. The study, conducted at the 'Centro de Estudos Ambientais e Desenvolvimento Sustentável' in Vila Dois Rios, contributes to understanding the species' distribution and its implications for public health in UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
