Summary

Research in Alto Urubamba, Peru, identifies three distinct farmer typologies based on resource management efficiency and economic logic. Among eight tropical crops evaluated for sustainability—using soil quality and crop health indicators—tea (6.65) and mango (6.50) ranked highest, followed by coffee and cocoa (both 6.25), while papaya scored below the sustainability threshold at 4.60. The study surveyed 106 farmers, applying descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis to classify typologies, then assessed crop sustainability through participatory evaluations on 24 farms.
