Ancient irrigation civilization of Arabia Felix (Yemen): Cultural heritage, historical cultural geography, tourism development
Yemen's ancient irrigation systems, particularly the Ma'rib Dam and its reservoir networks, represent a unique model of water management that transformed arid landscapes into productive farmlands. These hydrotechnical infrastructures, spanning millennia, not only facilitated agricultural productivity but also served as symbols of authority, prestige, and communal life for ruling dynasties. The study highlights Yemen's potential for cultural and educational tourism, driven by its rich historical heritage and diverse ecological landscapes. However, the preservation of these sites faces significant challenges, including dilapidation, natural calamities, political turmoil, and inadequate funding. Despite these obstacles, Yemen holds vast opportunities for tourism development, provided that critical factors such as political stability and increased awareness are addressed.
