The Book Heritage of the Scriptoriums in Kazan and Sviyazhsk of the XVII Century

2022 — Article — WHE462863B6A5

Research reveals that the Kazan and Sviyazhsk regions, integrated into the Moscow state in the 16th century, became pivotal centers of Russian book culture during the 17th century. The study identifies 24 Cyrillic manuscripts, including illuminated ones, from scriptoria in these areas, shedding light on their content, significance, and the identities of scribes and artists involved. These findings indicate systematic book rewriting in Kazan by the early 17th century, suggesting the existence of a bishop’s library and active book-rewriting workshops in prominent monasteries such as the Zilant Uspensky, Trinity Feodorovsky (Kazan), and Sviyazhsky Trinity monasteries. The analysis, based on catalogs and collections from scientific libraries, underscores the cultural and religious importance of these manuscripts while providing insights into the historical book production landscape.

A pXRF In Situ Study of 16th–17th Century Fresco Paints from Sviyazhsk (Tatarstan Republic, Russian Federation)

2019 — Article — WHE79D6CC7C25

A groundbreaking analysis of 16th–17th century frescoes from the Assumption Cathedral in Sviyazhsk, Russia, reveals the intricate pigment recipes used by Russian artisans during Tsar Ivan IV's reign. Using portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry, researchers identified distinct combinations of pigments, including slaked lime, antimony white, bone white, ochres, lead minerals, and rare earths like realgar and orpiment, which formed the basis for a wide range of colors. Statistical analysis highlighted key oxides such as CaO, Fe2O3, and PbO, shedding light on the mineral composition and craftsmanship techniques of the period. This study not only deciphers the chemical signatures of historical paints but also provides insights into the artistic practices and material culture of medieval Russia.

A Practical Approach to an Automated Accounting System Development of the Study Results of Historical and Architectural Sites of the Island of Sviyazhsk

2018 — Article — WHE8BD36526DB

An automated system has been developed to streamline the documentation, monitoring, and analysis of restoration efforts for the 16th-century Assumption Cathedral and Monastery in Sviyazhsk. This innovative approach integrates a knowledge base for damage assessment, protective measures, and scientific research with a visualization module featuring 2D and 3D models of the site, including sampling locations. The system also tracks environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity over time, ensuring comprehensive monitoring and control. Additionally, a physical sample database is established to catalog samples with unique identifiers, including details on location, date, and storage. This unified information system aims to centralize all periodic and current observations, enhancing the preservation and study of this historically significant architectural ensemble.

Horse-Headed Saint Christopher Fresco in the Sviyazhsk Assumption Cathedral (16th -17th Century, Russia): History and Archaeometry

2018 — Article — WHEF54C25BD69

A unique 16th–17th century fresco of Saint Christopher with a horse head, located in the UNESCO-listed Assumption Cathedral of Sviyazhsk (Russia), has been analyzed for the first time using archaeometric techniques. The study revealed that while original pigments included natural earths and smalt, traces of cinnabar, minium, lead white, chromium, titanium, and nickel indicated multiple restoration interventions over time. Scanning electron microscopy also showed layered painting, suggesting alterations to the saint’s depiction. Additionally, the fresco’s dolomite-based plaster exhibited degradation, with calcium-magnesium separation near cracks, providing insights into its long-term stability.
