Summary

A significant discovery in the study of Persian architectural heritage reveals the presence and functional significance of side yards in robats (caravanserais) across the Central Iranian Plateau. These side yards, often overlooked or misinterpreted, play a critical role in the spatial organization, social dynamics, and economic activities within these historic structures. The research employs a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating archaeological analysis with historical documentation to systematically identify and analyze these side yards. Findings highlight their dual purpose: as transitional spaces facilitating movement between public and private areas, and as functional units supporting trade, rest, or storage. This study challenges conventional interpretations of caravanserai design, emphasizing the importance of side yards in understanding the broader cultural and economic landscape of the Silk Road network.
