Summary

A geophysical investigation using gravity methods has identified the likely remnants of an ancient lake beneath Borobudur Temple. The study, conducted through Complete Bouger Anomaly (CBA) analysis, Bandpass Filter separation, 3D inverse modeling, and First Horizontal Derivative (FHD) analysis, revealed minor gravitational anomalies in the west, south, and east of the site, consistent with historical accounts of an enclosing lake. Depth mapping further suggests a deposit layer indicative of an ancient lake, located between 250 and 525 meters beneath the temple's surface on its east and west sides. These findings provide substantial evidence supporting the existence of such a lake, contributing to our understanding of Borobudur's historical and environmental context.
