Summary

Researchers have identified the likely location of Delphi's ancient hippodrome, long considered lost beneath alluvial soils. The site at Gonia, 1 km north of Itea, aligns with ancient literary descriptions and meets key features of a Greek hippodrome: an elongated space (~1 km) suitable for racing, natural slopes ideal for spectators' stands (with carved stone seats), and an amphitheatrical northern end featuring a column drum resembling turning-posts from other racecourses. This discovery challenges assumptions about the monument's location, invites reevaluation of Delphi's Archaic stadium, and raises questions about equestrian event participation. The study combines topographical analysis with ancient source interpretation to solve a long-standing archaeological puzzle.
