Summary
Traditional Algerian societies demonstrate sophisticated mechanisms of citizen participation that predate modern democratic paradigms. This study highlights the distinct participatory processes in two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the new ksour of M'Zab Valley, where 'twiza' governs communal building efforts, and Ait El Kaid village, where 'tajmaat' guides environmental protection initiatives. While both systems foster collective decision-making, they differ in structure and application, reflecting unique cultural adaptations. The research underscores the resilience of indigenous governance models in managing social and environmental challenges, offering insights for contemporary participatory frameworks.
