Summary

A study of diatoms in volcanic soils from Mutnovsky and Gorely volcanoes on Kamchatka’s peninsula revealed 38 taxa, with Mutnovsky hosting a more diverse flora (35 taxa) dominated by Eunotia curtagrunowii, Humidophila contenta, and Pinnularia borealis. In contrast, Gorely’s samples contained only nine species, primarily Caloneis bacillum and P. borealis. The research highlights the adaptive potential of diatoms in extreme volcanic environments, with most taxa being cosmopolitan and ecologically plastic. This contributes new insights into their ecology and biogeography, confirming their resilience in high-activity volcanic regions.
