Summary
A centurion-old aquifer recharge system in the M'Zab Valley, Algeria, demonstrates resilience through collective action and balanced resource management, offering a sustainable model for water use in arid regions. This study highlights how traditional oasis practices—rooted in circular economy principles (reduce, recycle, regenerate) and inclusive governance—mitigate groundwater depletion and promote equitable access. By comparing an established oasis (Beni Isguen) with newer agricultural extensions, researchers reveal that decentralized pumping disrupts long-term sustainability, whereas community-led recharge infrastructure preserves water quality and quantity. The findings underscore the potential of socio-hydrologic approaches to blend scientific expertise with local knowledge, providing a blueprint for ecologically sound and socially just Saharan agriculture.
