Summary
A challenge to the long-held 'grand connection' between Çatalhöyük East and Köşk Höyük reveals significant cultural divergence during the Neolithic transition in Asia Minor. Contrary to prevailing narratives, these sites exhibit distinct symbolic worlds, burial traditions, and material assemblages, undermining the assumption of direct cultural descent from Çatalhöyük East to Köşk Höyük. The study highlights marked differences—such as disparate imagery and burial practices—that complicate interpretations of regional continuity at the 7th-to-6th millennium cal BC transition. This re-evaluation prompts a reassessment of how cultural change unfolded in this period, emphasizing the need for nuanced approaches beyond grand narratives.
