Summary

A significant improvement in landscape ecological quality was observed in the South China Karst region from 2015 to 2020, with a comprehensive score rising from 0.539 to 0.662 due to effective rocky desertification control measures. The study applied spatial heterogeneity and landscape pattern theories to assess ecological quality at three levels: landscape stability, disturbance degree, and restoration ability. While overall progress was noted, areas of unused land and mining remained ecologically degraded, highlighting the negative impact of unsustainable activities like ore mining. Treatment strategies such as returning farmland to forest and agroforestry proved effective in enhancing ecological quality, particularly in northern and southern regions, though their benefits varied significantly. This research introduces a quantitative method for evaluating ecological quality in karst areas, offering insights for sustainable restoration efforts.
