Summary

Domestic cats (Felis catus) pose a significant threat to endemic bird species in the Yambaru region of northern Okinawa Island, including the flightless Yambaru rail (Gallirallus okinawae). A local ordinance requiring microchip registration for pet cats has proven effective in distinguishing between domestic and feral cats, facilitating targeted feral cat management. This study highlights the critical role of regional collaboration in mitigating predation risks to vulnerable endemic species, emphasizing the need for island-wide efforts to sustain conservation outcomes.
