Summary
A significant gender disparity exists in community participation for mangrove governance, with 71% of women and 69.2% of men not engaged in setting standards despite high policy awareness (94.6%). The study reveals low knowledge of key policies: only 27.8% recognize the Forest Conservation and Management Act, while just 6.7% are aware of the Public Participation Law. Community participation is further hindered by inadequate county-level policies, with 81% of respondents disagreeing on their existence. Using a mixed-methods correlational design, this research highlights how gender perceptions, education levels, age, and governance knowledge shape mangrove management outcomes in Lamu, Kenya.
