Antagonism of Discourses around Cultural Heritage

A discourse analysis of the conflict surrounding the preservation of Saint Petersburg's Historic Centre reveals multiple antagonistic discourses shaping urban heritage debates. Ten key interest groups, including UNESCO, local governments, businesses, and conservationists, dynamically re-form their identities through discursive processes. The study identifies new forms of antagonism, such as affective regimes, spatial visualization, and media representation, which influence heritage preservation efforts. Visual and graphical representations reconstruct the discourse of city defenders from media and social networks, highlighting how competing narratives shape urban development and heritage conservation.
