Cave monitoring in Hungary: An overview

World Heritage Site: Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst

Publication Year: 2021

Publication Type: Article

Publication Identifier: WHEBCEEB34AA4

Summary

A comprehensive analysis of cave monitoring data from Hungary's Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst, including Baradla, Béke, Vacska, Szemlőhegy, and Pálvölgy caves, reveals critical insights into karst hydrological processes and the influence of climatological factors on carbonate precipitation. The study, spanning 2019–2020, identified seasonality in CO₂ concentrations linked to external temperature variations, indicating dynamic cave ventilation regimes. Stable isotope analysis of drip waters further elucidated infiltration patterns, distinguishing contributions from winter and summer precipitation. These findings provide a robust foundation for interpreting speleothem-based proxies, offering valuable data on the interaction between anthropogenic influences and natural cave systems.
