Summary

A recent study documents the first specimen-based record of the mantis shrimp species Gonodactylaceus ternatensis and expands the distributional records of three other species—Lysiosquilloides siamensis, Alimopsoides tuberculatus, and Busquilla plantei—in Japanese waters. Notably, this marks the first occurrence of Lysiosquilloides in Japan and the northern hemisphere for Alimopsoides. The research provides taxonomic diagnoses, ecological insights, and standard Japanese names for these species, contributing significantly to the understanding of mantis shrimp diversity in the Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands. This study enhances our knowledge of crustacean biodiversity in these remote and ecologically significant regions.
