Summary
Geospatial analysis reveals that the placement of fortified churches in Transylvania was more influenced by local community decisions and strategic defense needs than previously thought. The study, which evaluated ten competing theories about their density and location, found no single dominant factor but highlighted the significance of hilltop placements, foothill positioning, and roles as watchtowers or part of broader defensive chains. A new database enabled rigorous testing of these hypotheses, demonstrating how geospatial methods can deepen historical research by uncovering nuanced patterns beyond traditional narratives.
