Summary
A significant misconception about the Musamman Burj and Palace in Agra Fort, India, has been corrected: contrary to popular belief, these structures were not a prison but served as Shah Jahan's harem room and living quarters during his reign. The study clarifies that this was where he resided with Mumtaz Mahal and maintained a view of the Taj Mahal even on his deathbed. Using primary sources like Akbarnama and Padshahnama, travel accounts, miniatures, current research, and field studies, the research elucidates the architectural significance, intended purpose, and historical context of these Mughal-era structures. It also highlights the influence of Hindu traditions on Mughal architecture, exemplified by the unique 'Shah Bastions' introduced during this period.
