Characterisation of Building Stock and Its PathologiesCase Study of the Historical City Centre of Leiria, Portugal

The historical city centre of Leiria, Portugal, exhibits significant architectural and cultural heritage value despite the absence of an integrated conservation policy. A detailed characterisation of its building stock reveals notable discrepancies in construction materials and techniques, even among similar urban centres like Porto, Lisbon, Guimarães, and Évora. This study highlights the importance of individualised analysis for each historic centre to effectively safeguard their unique heritage. The research employed non-destructive inspection methods to document pathologies and assess preservation needs, underscoring the necessity for tailored conservation strategies to protect these invaluable cultural assets.
