Summary

Archaeological excavations at Butrint, Albania, have uncovered evidence of a mid-Byzantine aristocratic oikos—a central administrative hub—dating from around AD 830 to 1200. The study reveals the structure and function of this elite residential complex within the Roman suburb, offering insights into Byzantine social organization and power dynamics. Drawing on Paul Magdalino’s theoretical framework, the research integrates material remains with historical analysis to reconstruct daily life, governance, and architectural practices of the period. This work advances understanding of aristocratic influence in peripheral regions during the Byzantine Empire's later phases.
