Summary
Linear cultural landscapes, such as trans-territorial infrastructures, pose unique challenges to heritage management due to their vast dimensions and high maintenance costs. Unlike traditional cultural landscapes, these structures require complex efforts to define, protect, and preserve their overall image and identity. A case study of the Canal du Midi in southern France, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, illustrates these difficulties. The research highlights the contradictions and challenges inherent in classifying such infrastructures as cultural heritage, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to their preservation.
