Summary

A funerary stele discovered at Gordion, Turkey, provides the first concrete evidence of Roman military activity at the site, revealing the presence of a previously unattested auxiliary unit (cohors VII Breucorum c.R. equitata) in northern Galatia during Trajan's Parthian War (AD 114–117). The Latin epitaph on the monument sheds new light on military deployment in Rome's lightly-garrisoned provinces of Asia Minor, where little is known about auxiliary forces. Recent archaeological fieldwork at Gordion has contextualized the stele within a Roman settlement, while newly published epigraphical finds further link its presence to the war's activities.
