Summary

Researchers have identified eleven distinct species of weakly electric fishes (Petrocephalus) within Odzala National Park, Republic of the Congo, including five previously undescribed species. These findings were based on morphological and electric signal characteristics, along with genetic evidence from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene analysis, which confirmed reproductive isolation among the species. Notably, Petrocephalus guttatus was reclassified to the genus Pollimyrus. The study provides a dichotomous key for distinguishing these species, contributing significantly to our understanding of biodiversity in the Lékoli River drainage and the Congo River basin.
