Summary
Researchers have successfully reconstructed the original colors and painting process of a faded Northern Wei Dynasty mural from Cave 254 at the Mogao Grottoes, addressing long-standing challenges in understanding these historic artworks. By combining multi-band imaging with advanced analytical techniques—including X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy—the study identified pigment compositions and stratigraphy, enabling a virtual restoration of the mural's original appearance. This approach provides new insights into the relationship between painting techniques and pigment degradation, offering a model for conservation and art historical research on similar murals.
