Summary
Socioenvironmental conflicts within Lençóis Maranhenses National Park reveal divergent priorities between peasant communities and conservation management. Peasant inhabitants seek to maintain traditional territorial practices, while managers of the Chico Mendes Institute of Conservation and Biodiversity aim to enforce environmental legislation as an Integral Protection Unit. The study highlights tensions arising from differing ideologies, where one group feels threatened by the other's actions, leading to defense mechanisms. Through a dialectical analysis, the research examines conflicts in six communities—three from the 'sand region' (Buriti Amarelo, Bracinho, Tucuns) and three from the 'beach region' (Canto dos Antis, Ponta do Mangue, Santo Inácio)—revealing the complex interplay between environmental preservation and peasant livelihoods. This work underscores the need for balanced approaches to reconcile conservation goals with local community needs.
