Summary

A novel assessment method for modern buildings in historical areas, exemplified by the İMÇ Blocks in Istanbul's Drapers and Yard Goods Bazaar, reveals that large-scale structures can harmoniously integrate with historic environments without compromising spatial quality. The study found that despite their size, the İMÇ Blocks maintained architectural consistency with traditional house layouts, respected historical vistas (e.g., views of Süleymaniye Mosque), and preserved transverse and longitudinal circulation patterns. The research compared site plans from 1933 and 1967, analyzing mass proportions, courtyards, circulation, and façade details against international preservation standards. Criteria for modern heritage included technical, aesthetic, historical, socioeconomic, and intangible qualities, while conservation focused on respecting existing landmarks and reversibility. The findings suggest that thoughtful design can enhance spatial quality in historic areas.
