Summary

A study on wood bison embryos exposed to Brucella abortus demonstrates that a 10-step washing procedure can effectively remove the pathogen. The research found that 89% of embryos were cleared of Brucella using a wash medium without antibiotics, while 100% were cleared when antibiotics (penicillin and streptomycin) were added. Brucella was undetectable in wash media after the third wash in both groups. This validates embryo washing as a reliable technique for producing disease-free wood bison embryos, crucial for conserving genetic diversity in Wood Buffalo National Park, where endemic brucellosis threatens wild herds.
