Summary

A novel methodology for optimizing roof covering designs in historic buildings, particularly those with open courtyards, has been developed to balance visual comfort and energy efficiency. The study demonstrates that parametric modeling using Rhinoceros3D/Grasshopper3D, combined with Ladybug and Honeybee plugins, can effectively evaluate solar heat gain, light transmittance, and area properties of transparent surfaces like ETFE. This approach ensures visual harmony while mitigating the greenhouse effect in enclosed courtyards, as illustrated by a case study on one of Mimar Sinan's buildings in Istanbul. The findings highlight the feasibility of using steel and ETFE for contemporary interventions, offering a scalable solution for preserving historic structures while adapting to modern needs.
