Summary
This study reveals that the relationship between social solidarity and territorial identity varies significantly depending on the type of crisis faced by rural communities. By comparing two Mediterranean agro-pastoral landscapes—the Causse Méjan (1980s–2000s) and La Manche (present day)—researchers found that while past crises failed to sustain durable local solidarity, contemporary approaches in La Manche are better at identifying new pillars for resilient rural communities. The analysis highlights how methodological and epistemological shifts in research frameworks influence these outcomes, offering key insights into the geography of social cohesion.
