Summary
A groundbreaking BIM (Building Information Modeling) system has been developed to address the complex challenges of conserving and preserving the mosaics of San Marco Basilica. This innovative approach leverages multi-source data collection, high-resolution photogrammetric acquisition, and a self-implemented BIM application to create a 1:1 scale representation of the basilica's intricate mosaics, achieving submillimeter resolution even in high domes (28 meters). The system organizes the complex into smaller, manageable parts, facilitating efficient data management during both survey and modeling stages. It also introduces a novel solution for handling gigapixel orthophotos, allowing users to access both geometric models and raster representations of each element, effectively turning the BIM model into a three-dimensional catalogue.
